You Don't Need To Warn Me About Your Body

So many people want to “warn” me about their bodies before their session.

“I have loose skin.” “My butt is covered in stretch marks.” “I’m scarred from a surgery.”

Every time they look in the mirror, all they see are imperfections they wish they could magically erase. They know they can't, of course, so they settle for a warning hoping to deter any surprised – or worse, disgusted – looks when they bare it all. What they don’t realize is that those “imperfections” are the art on their canvas. The paint that spills across their body, telling their unique story of this beautiful existence.

Y'all – yes, I'm talking to YOU – please give yourselves a break! Don’t be ashamed of your loose skin, tell me proudly how you met your goal weight and feel healthier than ever. Show me all your stretch marks from your journey into womanhood (yes, I have them, too) and thank your skin for being there for you. Display your battle wounds, you kicked ass and made it through a surgical procedure! Babe, you could be hiding full on reptilian scales under that robe and the first thing I’d do is sit you in the light and photograph that magnificent iridescence of yours. Why? Because the most beautiful thing about the human body is that it’s always different. Your asymmetrical breasts, pudgy tummy, hooked nose, and big teeth are what make your body interesting. Interesting is beautiful. Different is beautiful. And beauty is worth celebrating. So please, don’t feel like you need to warn me that your body doesn’t look like a cookie cutter instagram girl. You are worthy and beautiful just the way you are.
